General Practitioners (GPs) are the gatekeepers of India’s healthcare system and the first point of contact between the patients and healthcare system for most ailments.

According to the Global Burden of Diseases Data, 2019, around 18% of loss of global disability-adjusted life years (all causes) occurs in India.

Accessibility to healthcare services is limited because of skewed doctor-patient ratio, rising costs and out-of-pocket expenditure.

This study delves into the range of diseases and conditions managed by GPs and seeks to contribute insights into the healthcare needs and trends in remote patient care.

To identify the spectrum of diseases/conditions attended to by GPs on a telemedicine platform.

METHODOLOGY

The database used in this study comprised of anonymized patient teleconsultation (n=103561) collected over a 6 month period. (1 July to 31 December 2022)

The data was checked for duplicates, cleaned and descriptive statistics computed.

The predominance of cases in the General Medicine category underscores the role of GPs as primary caregivers who handle a wide range of health concerns.

Understanding the distribution of cases can aid in tailoring telemedicine services to address the most pressing healthcare needs effectively.

Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of continued medical training to equip GPs with the skills required to manage diverse cases remotely.

Telemedicine was found to deliver effective healthcare services irrespective of the geographical barrier.

Our study found that GPs effectively address diverse conditions via telemedicine, highlighting their vital role in meeting varied medical needs with high patient satisfaction.
